ABOUT THE EVENT Excitement is in the air!! HSMAI's largest fundraising event of the year is planned for Wednesday June 25th. Join us at the beautiful, newly renovated Fiesta Inn Conference Center as we host the 26th Annual Chinese Auction, "Year of the Rat". Proceeds from the auction will support the Children's Angel Foundation as well as the HSMAI student scholarship fund and various chapter activities. The 2008 Chinese Auction Committee has put a little "spin" on this year's festivities by incorporating the flair and panache of the Rat Pack, prominent during the late 1950's to the mid 1960's. The Rat Pack is a nickname given to a group of popular entertainers who often performed in Las Vegas. The most famous line-up featured Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop, and Peter Lawford. They projected an aura of style and sophistication. Dressed to the nines, while cutting up and having fun, they set the standard for classy, adult entertainment. So gather your own Rat Pack together and join in the fun! Be there or be square!! Not only is the annual Chinese Auction an exciting, fun-filled evening, but HSMAI members also have the unique opportunity, both through personal participation and corporate sponsorships to support a wonderful cause. We encourage everyone to donate live and silent auction items. Think outside the Pack! Potential donors could be the car wash you frequent, your manicurist, barber, hairdresser, florist, mechanic - anyone who might be looking to increase their business or client base. ABOUT HSMAI HSMAI is a global individual membership organization of sales and marketing professionals representing all segments of the hospitality industry. With a strong focus on education, HSMAI has become the industry champion in identifying and communicating trends in the hospitality industry while operating as a leading voice for both hospitality and sales and marketing management disciplines, as well as connecting its members with customers. Founded in 1927, HSMAI is comprised of nearly 7,000 members from 35 countries and chapters worldwide. The Arizona Chapter has over 300 members. ABOUT THE CHARITY The Children's Angel Foundation has been chosen HSMAI's "Charity of the Year" for the eleventh year in a row. CAF is the fundraising arm of Hacienda HealthCare, Arizona's leading healthcare provider (since 1967) of specialized services for infants, children and young adults who have medical, physical and intellectual impairments due to debilitating diseases, genetic disorders, accidents and abuse. THE CONCEPT The Chinese Auction was conceived in 1982 by the Arizona Chapter of the Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association Int'l. This event has gained national recognition and has been adopted by numerous HSMAI and MPI chapters through the U.S. as their major fundraiser. The auction was originally given the Chinese theme due to the location of the event - the former China Doll Restaurant in Phoenix. Over the years, the auction has grown in size and has moved its location to larger venues. The Chinese theme has remained. The idea of the auction is to provide each guest with a list of donated auction items (ranging from dinners and trips to golf outings) and a numbered stick. Each table is supplied with a bucket that is placed in the middle. Starting with the number one item, the auctioneer describes that item and asks the guests who are interested in bidding on this item to toss a quarter in the bucket. The guest then holds their stick in the air. The auctioneer calls out the sticks that are held up. A gonger (who cannot see or hear what is going on) is responsible for ringing the gong after a few seconds. The last number called out when the gong is rung has won that prize and goes to the stage to claim it. This sequence of events goes on throughout the evening until all prizes are gone. Over the years, a silent auction has also been added to the event. Bring your quarters, checkbooks and credit cards! Register Now!
